When I think of wonderful storytellers, Thomas "Sully" Sullivan makes my short list.

I look forward to continuing to read about the adventures of Sully on a monthly basis.

Oh, and Sully, Minneapolis/St. Paul is less than a five hour drive from Grinnell. Watch out or you might have a visitor one of these days.

Your voice is a whole dimension here Al, and I'm going to miss it. Hope you do come back into the roster at some point. Meanwhile, all best to you, my friend...

It adds immeasurably to the value of this column that you've been all all round the world on the issue of agents, Al. And your descriptions of the tones of those relationships set points of measurement for perspective. The agent/author dilemma does not have a one-size-fits-all solution. Thanks for weighing in on this, compadre.

I hated seeing "comments closed" at the bottom of the column. Maybe this will open up the floodgates.

"There is a difference between writing full-time, and writing fool-time."

Lol!

Also, you're admirably more involved than most parents I know in their kids' college applications. My friends and I helped each other out in reading essays and stuff, but our parents were sort of blissfully uninvolved. I never realized some parents could get as worked up as we did about the process.

I am still grinning at your plumber metaphor. But if I wasn't grinning, I'd be commiserating with tears. Witty and wise, Al, and spot on. When someone asks me if I'm a writer, I usually just say, "it's too late to get your money back." And I stand duly chastised for "fool-time" writing, which I do a lot of. Thanks for reminding me that I need to get back into the traces. Truth be told, I have a lot of stuff that is eminently salable (he said), and basically I need to decide what direction I want to go in marketwise. It's a critical decision and a crossroads I've faced before (and resolved poorly).

As for biz cards, have you tried photocopying book covers (mass market editions)? They get a little dogeared shoved into the back pockets of Levis, but then that's what book covers are supposed to look like, right? And the business cards I'd like to RECEIVE, are the ones from that 2% you mention who buy all the books...

Write on -- this is great stuff!
