Thanks, Bev. I needed that story. Funny enough, I also tried my hand at the "Dogs" type story. My ex-wife was working at a vet at the time and I called it "Dog Days of Summer." There's 100+ pages of it somewhere.

I really enjoyed reading this, and identified with some of it. I used to write all the time and then slowed to a trickle after I graduated from college. I still wrote, but very little. Three years or so I got back into it a big way and got serious. Hopefully it won't be long before I break through and see publication.

Over the last couple of years I've occasionally lamented the years I "wasted" in my twenties and thirties by not being as obsessed as I am now. I made a comment to this effect to James D. Macdonald on a surreal night when he and his wife entertained us and treated us like old friends (though we had just met that day) and he replied in the same vein you did--that maybe I was just spending that time building up experiences and things to say.

Good tale. I gapped into rock n roll. Fun for a decade. I got serious when I went back and got a degree and was poised to be a "real person with a job." That freaked me out so much I started a novel instantly and haven't stopped since.

<a href="#comment-415" rel="nofollow">@DensityDuck </a>
Density Duck: It's just the "I looked in my pants" genitalia prescribing gender thing at the very end. I don't think it was meant to be a big deal.

I second the question of whether Bev is an uncommon name, a shortened name, or taken on for some other reason, mostly because I can't think of any long dudenames with Bev.

Excellent article btw, even if it's months old

Sometimes you just *know* what the book's cover art is going to be, sight unseen.

It could be that he's a sole provider and doesn't want to give up the certainty of steady income, no matter how bland it is. I mean, not everyone has a wife with a day job who can buy the macaroni while he makes sweet love to Microsoft Word.

Also it sounds like he needs to get some new people to hang out with, but that's a different issue.

Thank you for leaidng with a photo. Your references to it livened up the obvious problem with the second editor's critique. I think the editor could be male or female. I can say men or more likely to make that sort of ignorant generalization about how all of them are supposed to think, but that'll only cause anecdotes showing women can be just as ignorant.

I was left wondering what "Bev" was short for, or if you'd considered taking a pen name to avoid possible gender confusion. That's pragmatic, though, and avoids the serious issue of gender stereotyping. It's shameful on a lot of levels, not the least of which is that men are browbeaten into repressing feelings.
