Janet - It actually doesn't and I shouldn't have used the word "necessitates". It would have been more accurate to say that for me, that viewpoint was best handled by making it present tense.

Dave - that is kinda weird. I agree though - once in character, they must stay in character.

Why do you say that using a singular point of view requires use of the present tense? --Janet

I meant to add that while the background and all of that on a character is important, I think that you have to sift out the most important elements of a character and focus on those...if you get too journalistic about it, you can bog down, and if there is a particular type of person or character you mean to represent -- you should focus on the traits that make your character that person.

This is almost eerie. Over in my blog, I just posted the following: Characterization - The Key is Consistency I got inspired to write it by the audio book I'm listening to - Ayn Rand's Manifesto on Romanticism. She had some brilliant, and some odd ideas...but the part about characterization hit me hard...

Once you create a character, from that point on, he or she must REMAIN in character. You can't allow them to act in a way that they would not, and sometimes this skews an entire novel in its own crazy direction.

Good article, and thanks for sharing part of your workshop..
