From a post this morning on profhacker in support of your argument:

"I won't even link to this round-up of new research suggesting that the single most important factor in improving self-discipline, productivity, and performance is sleep."

Good point!

It astonishes me that more people do not realize the healing quality of sleep on many levels and for many maladies, including "troubled writing."

As I've aged, I sleep less not so much by choice but due to insomnia. Now I see how the rest of the world feels most of the time. Sleep-deprived. Yikes. It's 1:20 AM....I gotta go to sleep!

"Get enough sleep, and your brain functions better. Your brain functions better, and you think more clearly. You think more clearly, and your ability to do silly little things - like utilize language constructively - is improved. In short, you write better."

I think this is the best advice on how to be a good writer I have ever read. Based on my experience, I can't really think creatively if I'm too sleepy or too tired. Thanks for the advice. I'm really a big fan of ths blog.

Simple, and straight; a gem of wisdom that seems hard to accomplish. I heard that the average American has less free time then a mid-evil surf. I'm sure that's bound to affect sleep. I know I've been guilty of being forced into a mandatory crunch in the past, and I tend to get nothing done after day two. I turn into a game developing vegetable (along with the rest of the team), and find fart jokes become really funny. Thanks for the well written advice Richard, you clearly got your sleep.

@Lawrence: Was your comment written on 8 hours of sleep or 4 hours? Just curious ;-)

All too true. The best advice I see possible. I often work in the night, sleep-deprived, suffer imsomnia, full of ideas just waiting to be peppered in MS Word...but if I'm on 4 hours, or 3, it ain't happening. Eight hours the inspiration and language is there, I'm refreshed, and I'm writing a marathon of words without having to go back and continuously revise.
